Childhood Memories – My Girl

 My-Girl-Anna-Chlumsky

Another day, another new feature here at Filmophilia. Today we bring you Childhood Memories, where we re-watch films we loved as children and see how they stand up to the harsh light of adulthood.  First up: My Girl.

I loved, loved, loved this film as a kid. A bookish tomboy myself, I really identified with the main character Vada. I thought it would be really cool to live in a funeral home like her and I wished I could be as brave and outspoken as she was. Continue reading

Childhood Memories – The Addams Family

When i was 12 I wanted to be Wednesday Addams. She was awesomely cool and mature, with morbid hobbies but unfortunately all we shared was an affinity for Shakespeare and the occasional torturing of our younger brother. Still, I was convinced that if she were real we would be best friends. Now that I’m all grown up and have (mostly) stopped torturing my brother, I no longer dream of going to class in a black dress and braids, but the Addams Family film and its first sequel remain among my favorites. Film Review – The Muppets

It’s not easy being green in the Muppets‘ new adventure. Written by, and starring long-time fan Jason Segel, this film takes the meta-textual route for the first time since The Muppet Movie (1979). Instead of inserting the Muppets into existing stories (or space), here they are very much part of our modern world. But is there still a place for them in the age of violence and reality shows?

Top Five – Michael Fassbender

2011 has been called “The Year of Ryan Gosling” by many. And while Gosling certainly had a prolific year, it can also be argued that 2011 was also “The Year of Michael Fassbender” Even if you don’t recognise the name you will certainly have seen him. With roles ranging from hardcore popcorn flicks like 300 to the indiest of indies like Fish Tank, Fassbender seems willing to try anything. This Irish-German actor with the piercing blue eyes has drawn the attention of critics and gossip bloggers alike (threatening to unleash “the beast” and “destroy the sweetshop” will do that ya know.) But being well out of his twenties by the time he hit it big, he’s not concerned with courting the paparazzi. He comes off as gracious, self-deprecating and intelligent in interviews. Someone who’s paid his dues and doesn’t take success for granted. Sounds like our kind of guy and therefore we’d like to take the chance and highlight his best roles so far. Continue reading
